once again I am very sorry guys but that is bugging me. I cant get my ubuntu to be operate within by mt4. I dloaded wine it works fine. I've since copied and pasted the 2 MCF dlls to the ideal folders as well as all the fonts. I dloaded fxpro setup . Exe to background. Right said to operate through wine and clicked it. Setup pops up so clearly something will work but it wont let me install it says can't re write to registry or something. Where is it installed by me. I've tried everywhere
Install it in the trial version of Crossover Linux

    http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxlinux/

Together with the mx3l some thing and the Microsoft Visual C Redistributable 6.0 packs in the auto setup wizard

OR just copy the install directory from a Windows setup and add the mfc42.dll into the windows/system32 directory.

I've got it working fine (besides cpu use).

I agree dont think its worth setting up mt4 in linux especially if your trading with real money as you will never know what can happen.
I have no difficulties with windows I like to tinker and experiment because I get bored and trading daily charts does that to ya I think ubuntu is trendy

I think if I had been to trade on linux I would trade through a java based web platform like prorealtime or the likes.

Lou, that worked quite well on the Input values. Now I can get into the boxes to alter parameters, but I still can't get in the Colour values, F2 does not work on them. Any ideas as to what can I get me into the color drop down box, or even the lineup style/width boxes?
Unsure exactly what did it, however, I was able to solve this issue on my installation. Allow me to know if you're still looking for a solution to this and I'll investigate.

The installer you downloaded from the broker.

I would put in it at a windows virtual machine (use Sun VirtualBox). I tried it using wine too and had it (almost) successfully running but there'll be certain items that just won't work correctly (such as the backtester such as!) And there's no known method.
I'm going to have to agree with 7bit here. I've been running Linux for years, but MT4 just does not play nice. I have it running with all the features I use (never use backtester) and I had to eliminate it, just 3 instances of MT4 was utilizing 80% of my CPU (even when I am not in the app)! Slowing down my whole pc, heating up my notebook and killing my battery life.

The specific same 3 instances use 0% of my CPU under the very same conditions.

Windows is not a liability unless you use it at a dangerous manner. Sure you can exchange in a Virtualboxed surroundings, but what's the purpose of using Linux if you'll be in Virtualbox Windows the whole time? I installed a clean version of Windows 7, did all the upgrades, set the Windows Firewall to take care of all networks as Public (blocking all local visitors, so no worms) and that I use Ubuntu in Virtualbox for many non-trade related activities.

This is overkill, however, I haven't had any Windows problems since XP. . .will only move back completely. It's not worthwhile for an active trader, IMO.

This isn't about programming but this is probably the most approprite forum.

Just got MT4 up and running in Ubuntu Linux! I am overly paranoid using windows nowadays with the numerous trojans/hackers/backdoors/rootkits and after wasting about two hours installing XP Again (!) Because of AVG which is the worst antivirus software ever I eventually got pissed off with everything.

If anybody wishes to understand heres a fast how-to:

    1. Install wine (sudo apt-get install wine), or install it in your package manager

    2. Duplie MFC42.dll from c:windowssystem32...
hello sorry to re start up this thread lol.
But I have been playing around with wine along with ubuntu and followed your instructions about the best way best to get mt4 to work but still struggling and cant get anything to work.

What can you mean by ch your installer from your mt4 broker. I understand where the terminal.exe is but what do I do with this?
